The GUIDE section contains the following four items: -CPT Guidelines which are the AMA's instructions for use of the CPT codes in general, plus use of CPT codes within each of the six sections*: -CPT Modifiers may be attached to codes when they are billed in order to provide added information about the service provided (Example: adding modifier -80 indicates that the service is being billed for an assistant surgeon) -HCPCS Modifiers may be attached to codes when they are billed in order to provide added information about the service/supply provided (Example: adding modifier -NU indicates that the equipment being sold is new) -Place of Service Codes These codes indicate the location where a service was provided (Example: code #12 is used to denote that the service took place in the patient's private residence)
*The six CPT sections are: Evaluation and Management Anesthesia Surgery Pathology and Laboratory Radiology Medicine (there are also Category II and III codes, but those are not categorized as "Sections") |
